A main chaplain is assigned to a company and makes weekly visits to the workplace. They work to build a relationship with the employees so they can help them with their emotional and spiritual needs. The chaplain is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and 365 days a year.
The chaplains never interfere with work, but set up appointments during breaks, before and after work to help with more time intensive needs.
In the beginning of a new corporate chaplain relationship, an orientation is offered to explain the program to the employees. This can be done in a group meeting (preferred) or explained in a flyer given to every employee.
If a specialty chaplain is needed to care for something like an addiction or intense marriage problem, we have chaplains specially trained for that. We also have female chaplains and chaplains for people speaking Spanish.
Companies like Ford see religious affinity groups as a means of embracing the total employee, says Daniel Dunnigan, manager of worldwide volumes at Ford and chairman of the Ford Interfaith Network. "For many people," he says, "faith doesn't stop being important when they go to work."
