Should You Hire a Workplace Chaplain?

Matt 25:39-40 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

Our Mission is to help provide emotional and spiritual care for company and business employees. We desire to be available for our clients 24/7 when they need a counselor, godly wisdom, or just a friend.

WHY A CHAPLAIN PROGRAM FOR YOUR WORK?

Good companies strive to care of the physical needs of their employees. They provide a salary/wage to cover food, clothing, and housing, and provide health care, if possible.

That is good, but a person has more than just physical needs. He also has a soul and a spirit that have needs.

1 Thess 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

In a different era, the body/physical needs were provided by their farm, business or job. The soul/emotional needs were provided by their family and friends. The spirit/spiritual needs were provided by their church and pastor.

In the day in which we live, families are split up, often live in different states, both working and pulled apart in many ways. The emotional needs of the soul are not being fulfilled.

Today, over 70% of the workforce doesn’t have a church or a pastor to help with their spiritual needs. Most people’s spiritual needs are not being fulfilled.

Typically, some federal and state institutions that do not have access to the emotional/family support and the spiritual/church support have provided a chaplain. The United States military provides, supports, and pays for chaplains to provide for their soldiers’ emotional and spiritual needs because, when deployed, they do not have access to their family or church. When a person is incarcerated, he does not have complete access to his family or church. Therefore, the state pays for a chaplain for many jails and all prisons. Many, institutions where there may be more intense situations and needs (police, fire department and hospitals) generally provided a chaplain.

We spend more awake hours at our workplace than any other place. Many more people have to work weekends, evenings and alternating schedules. All of those things add to stress and take time away from our emotional and spiritual support need. Even though our workplace is busier, the problems at home do not just go away. We bring them to the workplace as emotional baggage. Because of the stress of our lives, we bring our family and emotional problems to work, and bring our work problems home. All of that causes more family, emotional and work problems. When someone brings a problem to the workplace, it will affect production, attitude, and most of all safety. Many workplace accidents and deaths happen when the employee’s mind is “somewhere” else. When all that happens, it hurts the employee, the family, the business and profit/production (which is the bottom line.)

Coca-Cola Bottling Co. Consolidated in Charlotte, N.C., for example, has 19 chaplains on call from Corporate Chaplains for its 5,000 employees. "We recognized that we needed to try to deal with our employees as whole employees--bodies, mind, and soul," says Lauren Steele, vice president of corporate affairs. "It's been enthusiastically embraced by our employees, primarily because it's completely nonintrusive."
